Did you steal that content?

Saturday April 29, 2006
Just because an image or text is on the Web does not make it public domain. Did you know that in the United States, if you claim "fair use" you are admiting that you violated the copyright and if the court disagrees, you may have to face penalties? And if you're "borrowing" content from a site and that site is located in another country from you, that doesn't mean you're not stealing. Many countries in the world are a part of intellectual property treaties that would make copyright violation illegal where-ever you are.

In Australia fair use for educational purposes is defined as 10% or one chapter (whichever is less). It is still up to you to prove that the copy is fair use though.
