What computer hardware are you hoping to find under your tree?

Friday December 22, 2006
Christmas is only a few days away and there are some things that I know won't be under my tree - like my ultimate Macintosh setup.

But there might be a new Windows desktop computer (if Dell ships it fast enough...) And we did get a Wii... What hardware are you hoping for?

I would like a windows-free totally freeware orientated designing machine with plenty speed. running windows on my current machine, but am playing around with linux distros. much impressed. also, trying to stay away from expensive tools. quite a challenge, but very doable. merry christmas, and a blessed new year…

Not really sure why getting a totally freeware system is such a challenge. :) But that doesn’t really answer the question of what type of hardware you’re hoping for… After all, you can run most LAMP-setups on hardware that’s 3+ years old. :)

Hmm, recently built up my computer, but I’m lacking one fairly important element, that being a decent graphics card. Currently I’m using the on-board graphics chip, which isn’t too bad, but would like to get a directx 10 compatible card…doubt it’ll happen just yet though. =)

A new 8800 graphics card and a widescreen lcd monitor with 8ms or less.

Have a Holly Jolly one!

I just built the computer I would like under my tree (it’s for a customer). Dual-Core AMD X2 2.6GHz, 2 Gb Ram, and SLI 7600’s. Along with 19″ 5ms widescreen lcd. He’ll be getting it later… I needs more “testing” ;) (he’s also a friend of mine)

Wesley,

Currently the only Direct X 10 cards on the market are the extremely expensive GeForce 8800 GTX and the still quite expensive GeForce 8800 GTS. In three to six months, NVIDIA should have some lower end Direct X 10 cards, but until then those are the only choices.

Of course, if you need a card sooner and aren’t looking to spend that much, there are plenty of other options for Direct X 9 graphics cards. For a view of some of the ones I like the best that are affordable, check out my Best Budget PCI-E Graphics Cards.

I’m not picky right now. Another one like the one I got now would be really nice. It has 3800+ AMD , 1GB RAM… I’d like extra RAM cards and match the 250GB of storage would be okay. Windows or not, I don’t care if I ain’t paying extra then Windows is okay. All my extras are freeware already, except the games.

I already have a smoking Viewsonic LCD vx922 with a 2ms response time.. however, I would not mind getting a 200GB hard disk SATA or another couple gigs of ddr ram.
