One way to show off your skills is to maintain a portfolio site that displays the work you've done. Portfolios are a way to provide evidence to employers and potential clients that you can do the work you claim in your resume. They are used by many types of artists, not just Web designers. If you're looking for ideas for how to build and maintain your portfolio, check out the Graphic Design Portfolios article on the Desktop Publishing site. If you're willing, please share your portfolio URLs so that others on the site can benefit - and you can show off your skills!

Do you have a portfolio Web site? Remember, you can only vote once, so please read all the choices before you click one.

(3) Tom Wade says:

Although I have only been doing part time freelancing to get some money while I am in college it has been an invaluable resource and without it I doubt I would have got anywhere near the amount of the work I have had. I don’t know how anyone could work without one.

(4) Niko says:

Do you just leave it open to everyone or should you password protect so that only appropriate people can see?

(5) Jennifer Kyrnin says:

Niko: I would say that that’s really up to you - how private do you consider your portfolio? Some designers feel that making it public might allow their designs to be stolen. Others feel that making it public helps get more customers.

Personally, I would leave it public and put anything really private or proprietary on either a local hard drive or printed portfolio (if possible).

(6) Todd Austin says:

Although most of our clients are gained by word of mouth, I find they will still view our portfolio to gain a style perspective.

(7) Nelson Design Studios says:

My portfolio at nelsondesignstudios.com gets a fair amount of traffic on a monthly basis and provides an easy way for me to catalog and share all my work with current and potential clients, I only wish I had more time to keep it as current as I would like to…

I personally feel that a well designed and professional portfolio is a critical component for both freelancers and agencies alike.

(9) David says:

I believe that a portfolio is necessary for the small business or the part timer. If it were not for the portfolio I have on-line, a showing off of what I can do, I would not have obtained several contracts.

(10) GrokCode says:

Portfolio’s are a great way to showcase your skills. I am a programmer (web and applications). Portfolios aren’t that common for programmers, which is a shame since portfolios can work very well for programmers as well as designers. This article talks about the specifics of creating a programmers portfolio.

My own portfolio is here: http://grok-code.com/jesss-programming-project-portfolio/
