What are some good resources to learn CSS?

Friday October 26, 2007
Question?
Esmudd asks:
any recommendations for a good CSS learner's book?

My thoughts
Personally, I prefer to learn a computing subject online, because there are a lot of free resources and it's easy to copy and paste code from a Web site to my HTML editor to try things out. This About.com site has tons of online resources for learning CSS and moving to the next level once you've learned it.

But books have a place too. It's easy to put markers in pages that you refer to all the time, and you can write notes in them or just keep them on your desk for a quick reference. These are my favorite CSS books for beginners.

What do you think?
Do you prefer to learn CSS online or in books? And what are your favorite references?

There are so many CSS tutorials and guides online that it should be easy for anyone to learn CSS and use it properley. My all time favorite CSS inspiration is from the CSS Guru Stu Nichols http://www.cssplay.co.uk It is a web designers CSS playground! http://www.w3schools.com/css/default.asp is always a good source too, and Mike Meyers http://www.meyerweb.com/eric/css/
As for a great book to have I like Transcending CSS the fine art of web design, by Andy Clarke.

As an absolute beginner I found Simon Collison’s “Beginning CSS Web Development” fantastic. I had no understanding of HTML or CSS before starting, and as long as you’ve got a project to sharpen your teeth on as you read, it is awesome!

I enjoyed reading it too, it did an excellent job of giving exciting snippets and showing you the potential of CSS by building on what you’d already learnt.

No, Simon isn’t a mate :o ) just credit where it’s due.

Thanks. I’ve learned so much from this website. It’s in my RSS reader!

I’m struggling with CSS moving to a new template. I *almost* have it. The one issue is that I like to embed pictures, and blog using a bullet style.

I want the new CSS to work like this on my current blog.

But right now, this is happening, with the text shoved under the picture.

(It works fine in Firefox, but IE shoves the text below the image.)

Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

For those looking to start learning HTML, XHTML, and, of course, CSS, I heartily recommend Head First Lab’s “Head First into HTML, CSS, & XHTML.”
The best compliment I can give this book is that I wish I had written it.
It’s extremely learner-friendly, fun, and informative.
When I now need to learn a computer-related subject, Head First Labs is my first place to check.

Enjoy.

In the quest for accuracy, the book’s title is “Head First HTML with CSS & XHTML.”
You may resume your lives.
Thank you.

i am usally disspointed with the books. I have bought 2 books from best availaible choice I had but later I find… one should have a certain understanding of CSS to learn from book.

Whatever I have learned is from about.com, CSSplay, Eric Meyers site, maxdesign, 46brea street.

Also i try to find a tutorial where i can rip apart the css and find out how to build it from sratch.

I didn’t quite figure out the issue that I listed in #3 above. However, I was able to find a different Blogger XML file that was similar to what I was looking for and tweak it. Not quite as slick as the other template, but close enough and I don’t have to spend anymore energy on it!

Cheers!
