Poll: How do you prefer to learn new technology?
Thursday November 1, 2007
Web design and development is still a young field to be in, and there is always something new to learn around the corner. But how do you prefer to learn about the technology? Personally, I prefer to learn online, and then get books to keep as reference materials after I understand the basics. But I know other people who prefer to take classes or read a book first and then use online references as their backup. What is your preferred method and why? (And yes, I know that it's possible to like multiple methods, just narrow it down to your favorite, or if you absolutely can't choose, post a comment explaining what they are and why.)

I like learning on websites because a) it’s usually free and in massive amounts and b) I can find out more about it to see whether I like it enough to purchase a book or attend a class.

I do not depend on only method. The tutorials that come with the software, the books, and website examples are all techniques that I use to teach myself. Classes, online or off, are not currently feasible for me. Your lessons online have been helpful in pointing me in the right direction for solving several of my website development problems of late as I change to CSS styling. I also began much of my use of affiliate programs from comments you (some About blogger) made. Now I am using your comments on better webpage design to fix my scary pages.
Thanks for the info.

I like to use on line references from makers of applications. However some online references do not replace the need for books. I’m very the visual type and lynda.com is an excellent visual resource.
I use online tutorials for quick reference and books for deeper understanding of topics.
I usually pick up ideas and advice on the net, either from forums or some comments to posts. Then I start trying them out by myself on my own computer first.
I’m testing in IE6, IE7, Firefox, Opera, and NS4.5! Once I get everything looking OK then I go for it.
