You have lots of options for Web photo albums

Tuesday November 27, 2007

Dreamweaver CS3 One of the things I enjoy most is building Web photo albums. It's fun to know that the many photos I take can be put up in a format that my family and friends can enjoy. Dreamweaver makes this really easy with a Photo Album wizard, as does FrontPage. If you don't use an editor with a wizard you can use a free photo gallery template to create your own manually.

Thank you for this, this is great! I am a Graphic Designer with little experience building websites, but want to learn. I’ve been practicing by creating a wedding site I created for my Fiance and myself. I’m currently using a free photo gallery site, but I’m going to go ahead and build my own using the Dreamweaver tutorial you posted. Thanks!

I’ve tried the Frontpage version and it was OK. I then did my own using div and UL/LI and that felt better but then I had to creat all the thumbnails… A better option is to use a free web tool called Coppermine. It offers a lot with with automatic upload, thumbnail creations, user login, e-card, etc. It can be customized to blend into an existing website.

If you’re building an online photo gallery, there are plenty of free, customizable options out there… If you have a *nix based web server, try Gallery 2 which is a great piece of software.

I’ve spent many many hours in the past installing and configuring various open source galleries and even my own PHP MySql gallery. I tried Gallery2 and Coppermine but the one that I finally settled on is the one you can get for free at www.zenphoto.org.

It’s very easy to setup and works great. It’s built with webstandards in mind so if you know a little CSS you can customize it easily. The backend s AJAX driven so you can drag and drop images to reorder them and it has a nice tool to let you upload your images. I could go on and on. I like it because it does what you want without all of the overly complex bloat that I found unnecessary with Gallery 2 etc.
