Image maps are a tool in the arsenal of a Web developer, but they are one that is hardly ever used any more. In fact, these days it seems that you're more likely to find a site built with frames than with image maps. But why is that? Image maps serve a purpose - it can be much easier to navigate a map of the countries of Europe if it's in a map than a list of country names - especially if you know exactly where on the map the country you're interested in is. Back in 1999, for one site I worked on, the home page was a world map, with the regions supported in an image map. But that same home page hasn't had an image map on it for at least 7 years. Some people still use image maps and a lot don't. This article discusses some of the pros and cons of using image maps.
