Poll: What is important in the review of a website?

Thursday March 13, 2008

I've been hosting a weekly Web design clinic for about two months now, and I'm curious what you think is important in a review of a website. Is it more important to be critical or supportive? Is it more important to focus on the design or the HTML? What about the content? If you were to submit your site for critique here or anywhere else, what would you want to be evaluated? As with all my polls, there are sure to be answers I've left out, so if there's something else you think is important, please mention it in the comments.

(1) Gary S Hart says:

Is it more important to be critical or supportive?
- Critical in a supportive voice. If you want someone’s opinion, be prepared to hear it.

Is it more important to focus on the design or the HTML?

-Both. The HTML/CSS needs should be valid and well organized, but without good design, good coding is worthless.

What about the content?

-Content should be relevant and enough to justify the sites existence.

Features important to me in a review are looks, readability, content, navigation, overall design, SEO usage, and code.

Hands down, the number one most important thing is navigation. Every thing else is meaningless to visitors if they can’t find what they are looking for. Number 2 is the home page content. I want to know what the website or company is about before I delve further.

I think that the first thing to comment on is, does the first page up of the website quickly and clearly match the purpose of the website, or do we have to guess.
