Poll: Do you like sound that starts automatically?

Thursday March 20, 2008

I've written a lot about sound on Web pages, including a poll asking if designers use it, how to add sound effects onclick and onmouseover, and general instructions on how to add sound to Web pages. But I've never asked you if you like Web sites that play sound.

This poll asks the specific question of whether you like sound that starts automatically when the Web page loads. It's not asking whether you use it on your own sites. I'm just curious what your opinion is of sites that load and play music. Are there situations where auto-playing sound works better than others?

Sound starting on a site automatically is the quickest thing that will assure that I will not be back.

(2) Nermal says:

Either I’m listening to sound of my choice–music–or I’m in an environment not conducive to sound, such as my cubicle.

If you have a media site such as YouTube or a radio site, give me a prominent play button or make it clear in the link I’m clicking that the target page will have media.

Absolutely not! I guess in the early days, when we all figured out how to add sound, there were so many sites with awful midi files (me included at first), that even today, having sound blast at me when I open a site makes my blood curdle. It’s like finger nails on a chalkboard… a reaction I can’t seem to overcome.
There are so many ways to let the viewer choose, that there is no reason to make sound/music/voice automatic.
I even turn the sound off on my online gaming.

There’s nothing like waking up your sleeping significant other when you’re cruising the ‘net at 3 a.m. because you can’t sleep. Give me a button to turn the music on, or else no music at all.

(5) Craig says:

I tend to mute my computer speaker entirely unless I’m using the headphones. Since I’m looking at the screen, sounds aren’t telling me anything I don’t already know. I assume that they are usually annoying to me or those near me.

Sound that starts automatically when a webpage is opened preys on the startle reflex.. Can’t right offhand think of any sites that use this feature that I’ve been back to twice personally..
