Reader Question: Web organizations

Friday April 18, 2008

Question?
Rocky Mountain Ladybug asks:

"Anyone know much about IWA-HWG?... This is a composite organization made up of IWA (International Webmasters Association) and HWG (HTML Writers Guild). They are appear to be commercial ventures more than organizations. Do they bear any weight as far as "Oh, I belong to such and such organization". In other words, are they considered professional organizations?"

My Thoughts
Both the International Webmasters Association and the HTML Writers Guild have been around a long time. They are both considered high quality, professional organizations. I am not a member of either organization because the classes they offer are not things that I need at this point in my career, but others might find them invaluable.

My favorite Web organization is WebGrrls International. This group focuses on networking and career improvement for women in the Web industry. I would recommend any women in the Web field join this group - it's a lot of fun.

What professional organizations are you a member of?
If you are a member of a professional Web organization, what made you choose to join? What do you find most useful in your favorite group? If you can help Rocky Mountain Ladybug, you can post your thoughts in the comments here or reply to the message in the forum.

I was tempted to mention Fathers Against Radical Teenagers, but then I thought better of it. IEEE continues to be the organization that influences me the most. Its maintenance of solid, quality standards and fairness to its membership are the primary reasons.

I became a member of IWA/HWG in order to take some of their courses, most of which I found to be very good introductions to web programming languages and techniques. I don’t live in the US and I’m not sure whether it’s a recognized professional organization there. In Europe (Greece and UK) it didn’t ring any bells. However their courses pointed me towards working with web standards, of which I would have no idea otherwise. I still renew every time I want to take another course.

I’ve been a member of IWA-HWG for over three years. The courses they offer are excellent, and affordable! The entire aim of the organization is to promote and and educate their members on web standards.

I’d recommend them to anyone who is interested in learning the business of web design and who wants to take the time to do it right!

After going through comments from others, I browsed through the IWA website. I was surpirsed to note that the website has not been updated for more than a year. It does not go well with an organisation which educates others on web standards.
