Poll: How often do you update your site?

Thursday April 24, 2008

One common tip for improving traffic to your website is to post more often. After all, if you post once a week, your readers will figure that out and come back once a week - so if you post twice a week, they should figure that out too and come back twice as much. But it can take a lot of thought and effort to post a lot on a website.

How often do you update your site?
Does it matter what type of site you are updating? In other words, would you update a site about crafts more or less often than a site about news? What about sites with products for sale? In answering this poll, just try to think generally, and if it depends greatly on the type of site, let us know in the comments.

Personally, I try to update this site every day. I am not as good at regular updates to my other sites. I update a photoblog daily but otherwise, I probably update the sites I manage around once a month. When I say update, I mean making a change to the home page or some other significant portion of the site.

My blog: once a week. I had settled at once a month before, but I found out that if I update my blog twice more often than before, the number of regular visitors does much more than doubling, so that motivates me to keep up the pace.

My professional website: not enough! about once a year, when I decide to redesign it from scratch again…

I update quite often, but not on any regular schedule. I recently redesigned the home page of my business website by adding a PHP News script (used to share client and business news) and a featured client spotlight that changes every few weeks, both of which give me a purpose for updating.

I like to keep the home page changing to provide interest and keep people coming back. Both of these features do that for me.

Mine is a site about genealogy with some of my personal tastes thrown in. :  :

I update the What’s New Section nearly every day. I update the Tips as often as I’m able. The Classic Sketch comes from 1920s newspaper sketches that I’ve gotten from microfilm and restored — removing smudges and scratches. It is replaced about every 3 days. The Presentations are updated regularly and occasionally added to.

Happy Dae.
