Web design is more than just slapping images and text on a page
Monday May 19, 2008
Design used to be managed by professionals who had studied graphic design, but as budgets get tighter, speed becomes more and more important, and Web pages are critical for businesses, designers are more likely to be an afterthought. But knowing some graphic design rules can help your designs even if you\'ve never taken any courses in design.

The title of this article couldn’t be more true. However I would also suggest that a good web designer needs to have some interest and understanding of business and marketing, particularly if slef employed / freelance. They should be able to help a client identify specific purposes for the site and how that site will gain visitors. Whether a site cost £500 or £50 000 it’s wasted money if it achieves nothiong and gets no visitors.
I think the top 2 from this list are:
#3 Make it obvious what’s important on the page. Don’t overwhelm a visitor with choices. Make important things prominent. This will make your site easier to use and more effective if you are trying to sell something.
#10 Sometimes you need to hire a professional. Your website can help you make sales. If hiring a professional and getting a cracking (and effective) web design helps you get 1 more sales a fortnight then it will pay for itself.
