Poll: Do you use YouTube videos on your Web pages?

Thursday July 10, 2008

YouTube makes it easy to post videos on the Web and on Web pages. Plus, by using YouTube, you don't have to worry about bandwidth charges to your Web server. But there are drawbacks to YouTube. It can be difficult to share private videos and if you make your video public, you could end up with comments that are disagreeable as well. Then there are the rules that you have to agree to to use YouTube. Finally, with the latest ruling against Google, YouTube might not be as palatable for posting Web videos - especially with your privacy at risk.

I prefer to host my own videos. Sometimes sites like youtube re-encode with results that I do not like. Plus I like knowing my video is always up, unlike hosting on another site.

(2) Matthew says:

I only use embedded youtube for all my video tutorials on my site… saves me some bandwidth even with me on a dedicated server and a 100mbit connection and plenty of bandwidth, why put the extra load if youtube doesnt have a problem with it?

Personally, I heard about the Viacom deal and I lost all interest in posting videos to YouTube (or watching them for that matter). It’s not that I post or watch anything I’d be ashamed of, it’s the principle. It would be understandable to give them the rights to see viewer data on the shows they say were copyrighted. But everything? What is that other than a court-mandated violation of our privacy? Thanks Google/YouTube but I’ll pass from now on.

I’d love to know just exactly how to do this with out fumbling my way to sucess.
Your’s is the very first about.site I ever visited. I learned so much. I had just enough knowledge to be able to follow some of your online lessons. Great site! You are a wonderful teacher! I’m very grateful.

I’ve used You Tube quite a lot and didn’t fully understand the Viacom issue until you mentioned it. Thanks for the heads up. Yes, it does change my perspective. What a month for our privacy rights — FISA, Viacom . . .

(6) Nancy says:

I’m with Ingrid. This issue somehow didn’t hit my personal radar screen, so I am very glad you brought it up.

(7) Connie G. says:

Right now, I avoid using videos on my personal blog. I don’t want to post images of my family because of privacy issues – I really wouldn’t relish my video becoming the latest viral video! And, my sister would kill me if I posted videos of her kids. She is very protective of them.

Eventually I would like to post some video tutorials, but I am trying to figure out what the best method will be.

When you get that figured out let me know Connie. I would like to do some for my business site but like Jennifer, I’m staying away from YouTube.

(9) Deb says:

I’m completely illiterate when it comes to online videos. One of these days I’ll have to get with it. BUT, I’m really happy to have found all the other great stuff on your site. I’ll be back!

(10) NSGill says:

Ever since the early days when people added odd musical bits to their web pages that played over and over I’ve turned the sound off on my puter. Puter starts up silently and no annoying little audio alerts. Now that the videos are becoming more popular, I find I must occasionally look at the videos. I don’t like to have the sound on, but it’s necessary. Not a happy camper.
