Web Design Clinic - sherwood camping

Monday September 15, 2008

Sandra submitted the site "sherwood camping". One of the first things I would do is get rid of the scrolling text at the top of this design. It's distracting and very hard to read. Since it appears to have dates in it, this implies to me that it has important information that I shouldn't ignore. But because I have to chase it across the screen with my eyes, it hurts to try to focus on it, so I do ignore it.

How Would You Critique This Site?
What advice would you give to Sandra about this site? Are there things he could do to make it better? Have you created a site like this? What did you do to make the site work for your audience? Post your comments on the design

Do You Want Your Site Considered for the Web Design Clinic?
There are two ways you can have your site reviewed on Web Design @ About.com. You can use either method, you don't have to use both:

  1. Post a request in the Site Review Requests folder in the Web Design forum. This is the best way to get feedback, as you'll get responses from other Web designers in the forum, and selected posts will be chosen for the Web Design Clinic.
  2. Submit your site to the Web Design Design Gallery and check the "solicit critiques" checkbox on the form. Pages submitted there will be reviewed by the About.com Guide to Web Design, Jennifer Kyrnin, and may be chosen for the Web Design Clinic.

This is a business site and as such it should try to look as professional as possible. Until Sandra advances technically I would recommend purchasing a good commercial template (under $100) and learn and tailor it to her needs. Secondly, there is no compelling content to attract customers. Put together a nicely laid out set of photographs (seasonal, and key attractions). The rotating images are at best a distraction and one cannot explain or expound on each scene.

As for attracting visitors to the site the whole site needs much more content, content, content to ever rank well in the search engines. She should put her key words into Google & Yahoo and see what her competitors have done to rank well.

With all of this - welcome to the Internet Sandra - I wish you well.
