What is your favorite free Web editor?
Wednesday November 5, 2008
I'm always looking for a good deal, and one of the best deals you can generally find is when something is free (assuming it's not spyware or malware... that would make it a bad deal). Anyway, I've updated my lists of free Web editors: Free Web Editors for Windows, Free HTML Editors for Macintosh and, Free HTML Editors for Linux and UNIX. But I'm curious what your favorite editors are. I've already received the suggestion "Phase 5" for Windows free editors from aarnmunro. But I'm wondering if there are others. Do you have a favorite Macintosh HTML editor or what about Linux or UNIX?

Notepad(, also my one and only PHP editor)…
Yes notepad is great for HTML.
Still looking for a free PHP editor though.
I use NuSphere’s PHPEdit, but a freeware or OpenSource editor with PHPEdit’s features would be great.
phpDesigner is pretty decent… although I haven’t tried the latest version: http://www.mpsoftware.dk/
Although I use Dreamweaver alot of the time, PsPad is one of the best text editors that I’ve come across. It has support for alot of advanced features including multi code highlighting, ftp, validation and a plugin api. For the true Geeks among us it also has a hex viewer / editor…
Well, Notepad is on my list, but honestly, it came in dead last. Why? Because it has absolutely no features for Web design / development support.
As for free PHP specific editors, my favorite is Komodo Edit because it has support for so much, not just PHP. But another good one is Aptana Studio Community.
I use EditPlus, which comes with a free 30 day trial version. However, the trial version does not expire, so I am currently on day 237 of the 30 day trial! (I keep meaning to register it, someday!)
Also, for an online rich text editor I use FCKeditor for my Drupal sites, and I am using TinyMCE on a Joomla! site.
I have looked at CoffeeCup, I think it is good, but I do not use it.
I have used 1st page 2000 since 1997.
It has different editing levels.
From the beginner to the expert.
Its also free.
