If your client asks about blogs

Friday November 21, 2008
One of the questions I've been getting from clients lately is if I think they should have a blog. My answer always depends upon several things including:
  • How much time do they have to write a blog
  • How much interest do they have in writing a blog
  • Is what they're selling or providing online conducive to blogging (would you really read a blog about laundry soap - seriously)
  • How much computer knowledge do they have
And before you comment on this, I've been working on a number of sites for people who don't really use the Internet. In one case, I didn't realize he even knew what a blog was. And, yes, there are lots of this type of person out there. Many of them lead productive lives, too. :-)
But if you ask Tammy Hart Designs, she'll say that every business should have a blog. And she makes some great points regarding why in her post: Should your business have a blog? One thing that you should remember when you're talking to clients is that blogging is not just for diaries any more, and hasn't been for a long time. Lots of companies have blogs, and they have lots of success with them.

I almost always encourage my clients to start a blog, but I’m always upfront about the effort involved in keeping it useful. My first client had me put a blog on their site, but never updated it more than once a month; it was utterly useless as a marketing tool.

My client really wanted an RSS feed for their announcements and updates. Using Blogger and Feedburner was the easiest way to do it for them. They may never use the blog for more than that but it is free, easy to use and they love it!
