How did you start freelancing?

Wednesday November 26, 2008

I started doing freelance Web design on the side while I was working full time. I started doing it mostly to help some friends. I had a full-time job as a Web developer, and they needed some development work on their website done really quickly. I wasn't sure I had the time to do it, so I quoted a price that I thought was exorbitantly high for what they wanted me to do. With no hesitation, they accepted and I had my first freelance job. I did that type of ad-hoc job for 8 years before I finally quit my day job.

How did you start freelancing? Some of the answers I've already received include:

I hadn't really intended to be a freelance anything, but I got made redundant for the fourth time in three years and as there was no help package available from the governement, I had to do something.

I've seen that acquaintances/friends/etc have needed some work done on their websites. On my own time, I've done some simple mocks and wire frames which I've sent as my ideas - usually totally unsolicited.

I built a great website for myself then others started asking me to do small jobs, before I knew it I was freelancing full time.
