Is your search engine traffic good traffic?
Sunday December 7, 2008
SEO or search engine optimization has become very popular in the last few years, and yes, if you can get in the top 10 results of various search engines this can increase the value of your website. But if you're trying to sell something, if the traffic you get from a search engine doesn't buy anything, you aren't going to make money. SEO Hosting asks the question Should Monetization Be Part of SEO? And the answer is "most definitely." On one site I worked on, the priority was on getting sales, so our SEO efforts were on finding terms that generated sales. We tracked what terms people found the site with and compared that to people who bought products. Then we focused our SEO energies on those terms that related best to buying customers. On another site, monetization was through advertising, and getting customers to view multiple pages was important. So we focused on keywords (and, in this case, search engines) that generated more pageviews per customer.

I couldn’t agree more! This is also one of the most difficult points to explain to a client when talking about SEO, particularly if they are new to online marketing. It’s not always the highest traffic keywords that will gain the most sales.
It all boils down to planning and analysis.a good SEO will try to gain some insight into thier client’s industry to find the ‘hidden’ keywords that go a long way to pre-qualifying site visitors.
