I voted linux, but have had the misfortune to have to have to work with a client’s existing Windfows hosting a few times. I probably made a rod for my own back wanting PHP, but it just seems that certain things are not striahgt forward with windows (never mind the security issues, which are definately less in Linux if you’re sensible about your coding.) But we all know that really:
Servers should be linx; desktops should be windows(or mac
) It’s just the rule!
I haven’t yet needed to work with the latest version if IIS, which I understand has some significant improvements.
Just my (slightly tongue in cheek) thoughts
Have looked at Windows hosting but I use a VPS for a number of sites. Difference in cost per month was the deciding factor. Nearly triple the cost for windows hosting with same specs.
Also I believe Linux base is far more secure and stable.
My site is hosted on Linux, and I’m really happy with it.
I also have a an Apache 2 test server + PHP 5 installed on my home Windows XP PC for testing quickly (well, not really – timeouts are a problem) pages and scripts. I agree my computer is slow, but several times I’ve managed to DoS myself (on purpose of course) with a PHP script… it’s so easy to do on Windows.
Linux hosting and I use Ubuntu Linux on the desktop.
I use linux hosting, but I use ASP.NET and SQL Server sometimes, even though I’m on Linux it seems to work fine.
