Web Host Reviews - 8 New Reviews - Is Unlimited space/bandwidth important?

Wednesday July 8, 2009

In looking at the companies reviewed this month, I find it interesting that so many companies offer unlimited bandwidth and file space. I also find it interesting that many companies still limit the space or bandwidth. I think the logic goes that most people aren't going to use that much space or bandwidth, so instead of nickel and diming them, you just say it's unlimited and hope that most of your customers don't become the next big thing and DoS your servers by accident.

Is the amount of space and bandwidth important to you? Personally, I wouldn't mind having unlimited bandwidth (I don't currently on my colo). I am always thinking that the next site I build will hit it big and I'll have to pay bandwidth charges. So far, no go, but who knows...

And on to the reviews. P.S. if you submitted a hosting review and it's not up here, chances are it looked like an advertisement for the hosting company and not an actual review. I reserve the right to refuse to post any reviews that are or appear to be written by the hosting company themselves.

It seems a shame that Engine Yard is not mentioned here, they have a great service and are a really good place to host Rails sites in the cloud.

Anyone who wants their host to be listed on this site is welcome to write a review. I only profile hosts that have been reviewed by my customers. I can’t possibly review all the Web hosting companies out there, but if you’ve had good or bad luck with one, writing a review will get it noticed. Comments on the blog are welcome, but won’t get the sites listed in my lists of 10 Best Web Hosting Providers and 10 Worst Web Hosting Providers as these are generated by the reviews I’ve received only.

“I love BlueHost and HostGator.”

Amen to that regarding Bluehost! I’ve been with Bluehost for over three years and have been hosting multiple sites from my account with no significant issues at all. The few minor problems that I’ve had (mostly my own fault) were resolved quickly with the help of their fantastic support team.

(6) Danny says:

Unlimited space and bandwidth is important to the webmaster say for example if you would like to host videos or do ecommerce and your site loads slowly or does not load at all it is a major issue.

Few of the web hosts that provide such service and are pretty reliable are hostgator and hostmonster.

(7) Thor says:

One concern that is probably only theoretical for a beginner (but still, every visit counts) is if certain governments (Saudi Arabia and China for certain, possibly others) block the host wholesale because someone uses them to publish porn online.
