Is 99% Uptime Good?
Monday July 13, 2009
Web hosting providers often proclaim their uptimes in bold letters all over their marketing materials. They want you to know that they have 95% uptime, 99% uptime, even 99.9% uptime or better! But what does that mean for you the consumer? Learn more about uptime in this uptime article. And share your thoughts about the importance of uptime.

Mine states 99% uptime, but I had to get to the hosting plan page to find that info.
The good thing is that I had no problems so far *knocks on wood*
That’s good news. Ultimately, I think the guarantees are less useful than what the actual uptime is. Unfortunately, if it’s possible to find out before you commit to a host, I haven’t figured out how. Anyone know?
Unfortunately, the only way that seems to be available is to read reviews to get a feel for what the actual uptime is.
Even then, it appears that most hosting companies document their overall network uptime. Any particular server on their network may have a lower availability from time to time.
As the previous poster said, Knock on wood! I’ve had good uptime with Bluehost for the past three years.
I’m thankful that my hosting provider Go Daddy claims a 99% uptime, I can state that it’s closer to 99.9% over the 3 years I’ve been hosting with them. There an numerous fee based monitoring products on the market, I like two “FREE” products you can use for monitoring your websites (server) uptime. I use hyperspin (http://www.hyperspin.com) and siteuptime (http://www.siteuptime.com). I enjoy the service and the information they provide, and its free!
