Poll: What is the primary reason you left your last hosting provider?

Often, when you decide to leave a service, there is a specific reason for doing so. I've read a lot of Web hosting customer reviews that give various reasons why they left a hosting provider. If you had a different hosting provider before today, why did you leave them? If there were multiple reasons, what was the most important reason for leaving? And if you've always used the same hosting provider, and would never consider leaving, why not? What do you like best about them?

Maybe “Pulling features” should be included, because that’s what I would choose. It’s especially valid for free packages, or new and/or not very well planned providers.

Company was sold (not informed), downtime was greater than uptime; telephone support went to a ticket system through the control panel, which was also down, response was a week in coming. After a 90 minutes drive to the company headquarters I was able to cancel my account after doing some backflips. From what I read, they are still under the new ownership about 5 years now and their service and performance are right there with the Titanic.

I have tried a few. I usually go with free to see how it reacts. I have seen 2 that just dropped off the face of the internet and took my sites with them. Luckily I kept things backed up. Always returned to the one that I use now and actually pay for. Occasionally down for maintenance for a matter of a couple hours once a month. But other than that, its been a great service.

I left my last provided as they were totally inflexible, gave no DNS controls, and suggested that I upgrade to a much more expensive package to change the DNS servers for two domain names that I owned. I would have quite happily paid an admin fee, but they just didn’t want to know. I threated to move everything from them, but they just advised me how to do it. So I did.

The number one culprit from hosting partners/providers in the past has been a lack of quality service / technical proficiency. The first hosts I used had excellent costing and features but when things went wrong (as they occasionally will) there was no one there who knew what they were doing to answer questions or even assure everyone that things were being dealt with.

The very first hosting company I ever tried and soon left developed a nasty habit of charging my client’s credit cards for new services they never ordered, saying it was the client’s responsibility to refuse additional services! This was Globat btw… stay clear of them.

The first host i left, was because i couldn’t get a clear answer from them regarding how much bandwidth i could use. The actually sold the product with “Unlimited*” traffic – and then proceeded to use 4 pages of the EULA limiting what unlimited means….

The second host i left was because of some asp code that had stopped working on their server. After 3 weeks of trying to figure out why – they finally announced that they had given up. With all my confidence in their ability gone, i left.

The host i am with now decided a week ago to move my asp-sites to a new server that doesn’t have asp installed…. But this time – instead of leaving – I switched to php :-)

I am GOING to leave my hosting company once I find a suitable replacement. (I am a novice webbuilder at this time.) The big problem that occupies my time, with this host provider, is there is NO automatic update available when I make changes to the website. I have to call support each time I make a change. They tell me I have to change my password and then the updates will take place. This does not work. I then have to call back to complain more. Then they tell me they will consult the technical department. And then, maybe the changes will appear about 4 to 10 hours later. I am still waiting for my last update to take place (three days ago I asked for the update). Frustrating to say the least – not to mention ALL the time that is wasted!!!

As an add-on to my previous comment: I discovered after looking around this forum that my current web host company is on the “10 Worst Web Hosts” list. ….would have saved me time and money if I had seen that earlier.
