How to Become a Web Designer

Wednesday October 14, 2009
There are as many ways to become a Web designer as there are people who want to become them. You can be self-taught or get a 4-year degree. You can learn as you go or build sites for friends, but always make sure you like it before you turn it into a career.

Unfortunately there is no possibility of a 4 year degree in Web Design in my country (or a master, and I suppose it’s the same in most of the neighboring countries), the closest match is with IT. I suppose art and IT would be a good pair. Another option is Graphic Design.

Practice makes you perfect and there’s no substitute for hard work – whether you take up a college degree or you learn yourselves.

The internet is a great way to start learning web design – all you need to do is follow resources which follow a simple and easy to understand terminology.

People often believe that web programming is cryptic and difficult – especially HTML, Javascript and PHP. So, is that true – I would say – yes and no ! If you are a beginner, it’s best to learn one step at a time perhaps starting with basic HTML and then moving on to more challenging stuff. If you are designing a website for yourself and still learning how to be a web designer, it’s not a bad idea to hire a professional web designer for your first few websites.

Once you get comfortable, you can think about turning a professional web designer. With the advent of Web 2.0, web design is going through a revolutionary phase where the emphasis is on enriched user experience. While it’s not a piece of cake, it isn’t as hard as moving a mountain either !

Cheers!

I am a mixture of self-taught and college educated regarding my web design experience. I spent 2 years studying computer programming in college, then switched over to the business school and finished out with a Bachelors in Marketing. After a couple years working in the Internet Marketing industry I decided to resign from my position and start my own web design firm. So step one was to pick up where I left off and go the self taught route. I’ve been designing websites on the side for myself and friends as a hobby for nearly 12 years, so it didn’t take long for me to become successful at what I’m doing now. :)
