Is Your Hosting Provider Green?

Thursday October 29, 2009

I have looked at a lot of hosting provider's Websites, and they all say the same thing. So when I came upon the Green Geeks hosting site, I was surprised. They offer similar hosting plans to other providers, but they do one thing differently - they are green. In fact, they claim they are "300% green hosting." This intrigued me so much, that I asked for an interview with their CEO, Trey Gardner to find out more.

Is your hosting provider green? Why not let us know by submitting a review.

My host provider clearly doesn’t state any info about being green, but they mentioned several times on their site that they are named #1 in the country by a magazine.
I suppose getting green won’t become a trend very soon or very easy.

hmmm…. my host provider also doesn’t state that they used alternative / renewable energy, plant trees, recycling waste and purchase RECs to power their datacenters.

but i think we should patronize a host provider that are GREEN.

It is a lovely thing if you can get a host with concerns about their eco-footprint, but as much as I love to hug the odd tree, I look at this as a bonus after I’ve already chosen a provider based on support & expertise.

Rackspace used to make mention of their green policy but don’t seem to highlight this anymore, not sure what happened there.

My old host states they are “GREEN” with tree planting and the whole tree hugging thing, my NEW provider doesn’t state anything.
Both Australian based and with servers in similar areas. Both running XEN VPS.
My NEW provider is just over half the price for a better package. 1024mb vs 512mb for the old.
Coincidence or what?

Web hosting companies provide the infrastructure to keep a website on the Internet. Web hosting is a highly intensive user of electricity. Using a website to promote a business may seem like a green activity (no paper brochures etc) but one cannot escape the need to consume electricity (and other resources) to run the web site. Businesses which seek to be truly “green” must consider the “green” attributes of all elements of their business. This includes their website. Web hosting providers who take some measure to be green. Some are better than others but all take some credible steps to reduce and mitigate the resources consumed in running their businesses. In most cases they purchase carbon credits, and some operate their own solar or wind power production facilities. I recommend using a host provider that uses a green host for the benefit to World.

There are endless things to know and endless gimmick!! Green hosting!! thanks to you that I first time hearing this term. when I seek a hosting service I see their uptiming and loading time never go for… whether power is from green or black(coal) or radioactive. Certainly Green term is a craze to day when world is worried about “greenhouse” effect. Hope it is not a trick to earn more from the clients of a so called green hosting.
