Good list.
I’d only add one more thing: don’t cram lots of multimedia files on one page. Viewing a few youtube videos embedded into one page becomes quite heavy on resource usage, even on fairly recent computers.

Thanks, a good list. But the word multimedia sounds very old fashioned to me. Reminds me of CD-ROMS!

Another tip, if you are using multimedia on an entry page, leave it there and don’t replicate on every content page. No matter how cool an entry flash movie or sound bite is, it gets annoying when it starts again and again and again as the visitor navigates through your site.

If you decide you want to implement some video on your site but you need better quality than Youtube can provide then you will need to look at a CDN (content distribution network). These services allow you to serve up large file sizes from multiple hubs allowing for quick streams and buffering. We recently implemented an online course done via weekly video with associated downloads that had file sizes approaching 1 Gb each. Our CDN provider pulled it off with very few problems.

I’d say – never auto-run your videos and page sounds. Let the user decide if they are worthy of listening.
A notable exception would be a band’s site, in my opinion.
By the way, there’s a new video tag in html5, and some browsers already show some support, so if you’re in the html5 club, you might give it a try, while keeping some backup options for the older browsers.
