Project Managers Can Be Useful, But They Can Also Be Annoying

Last week I posted about some of the many ways that Web designers and Web developers can get on each others nerves. I then received a couple comments saying that that was what Project Managers were for - to make sure that the team members communicate. Well, I'm not arguing that point, but it made me start thinking about project managers - and if there's one thing that will make feuding designers and developers band together, it's in their hatred of Project Managers. :-) I have worked on many projects that wouldn't have been completed without the PM, but I have also been on many projects that were desperately hindered by the PM. And even good PMs have annoying tendencies. You might even argue that that's what makes them a good PM.

I guess I could have guessed that this post was coming, as I was one of the commenters you mention. My wife and I talk about work stories from time to time, and I have pointed out that sometimes that relationships at work are supposed to be a bit adversarial. Two sides pulling on a rope with equal force so that the rope stays in the same spot. A PM is supposed to be annoying (sometimes) in order to make sure that the end result is done to client specifications. A designer is supposed to push back to make sure that the work meets design principles. The end result (hopefully) is that the work is both.

Jason: Yes, normally, you could guess that this type of article is coming. But ironically it was my husband who suggested I write it. :-D Apparently he’s even snarkier than I am. :-) Seriously though, I agree that sometimes it IS the job of the PM to be annoying otherwise we wouldn’t get anything done on time. The developers would be adding “just one more cool feature” and the designers would be modifying “just one more small design change”. I think of PMs as the people who’s job it is to get perfectionists to let go.
