Halloween Should Be Scary—Web Design Should Not

Tomorrow is Halloween and you might be planning (or already have) a big Halloween styled theme for your site. When I worked at Netcom, I designed a "Haunted Homeport" with dripping blood, scary fonts, and even zombies. The page displayed randomly to various visitors, and it was such a big hit that our VP asked me the next year if I'd make it less random so more people could see it.

black cat and pumpkinBut Halloween is supposed to be scary. Web design is not. Unfortunately, there are many websites that are scary 365 days a year because they use design techniques that are just too hideous.
