Challenge #3 - Which one is the ugliest?

Monday December 18, 2006
The third challenge was for people to build the ugliest page they could - the idea being that if we can define what makes something ugly,

we can avoid that and make our designs, umm, not ugly.

Check out the following designs, and when you've found the one that is the ugliest, vote for it. Remember that you can only vote once, so I recommend you look at all of the designs before you decide.

I can’t vote, they are all too ugly, they should all win :-)

(8) SAGE'S UNICORN! says:

I can now say absolutely that I have seen UGLY!! #4 made me physically ill, I’m serious, I’ve never had that before, I became nauseous, it hurt my eyes and made me dizzy which isn’t good for someone that has seizures!! The person that made #4 should be arrested for indecent site exposure!! #2 came in 2nd, I was going to go for that one until I saw #4. After looking at those two all of a sudden the others looked pretty good!! Congratulations, I guess!

Of these the most ugly is a draw ‘tween #1 and #4. Content (the message) is king…but one cannot find the content easily in either of these. The others can be read, despite any errors or ugliness. I chose #1 over #4 only because it ignores the most common color blind issue of web pages, red/green.

(10) digibudi says:

Ok, #4 is not readable, but it’s sooo much over the top, that I kinda like it! I think #1 is not as weird, and therefore the ugliest. Or isn’t this making any sence? Love the compition, great idea! Why not have an anual ugliest website compitition? I’m sure there are a lot of contestants out there.. :)

(11) Roslyn says:

I picked #6 because it was closer to reality. The others were obviously ugly but #6 was an “ugly” that was more likely to appear in the real world, so I picked it. Thanks for the fun.

(12) Terri says:

I think they were all ugly in the fact that none followed any means of conventional design. None followed the crap (content, repetition, alignment and proximity) rules. But there is a huge distinction between ugly and tacky. Filling a page with 1000 animated gifs on a repulsive background to me is tacky and ugly. Ugly design has more to do with what you are lacking than what you are overusing in my opinion.
I find 2 to be the most realistically ugly page. By realistically I mean a page that someone would create thinking that it legitimately looked good and could benefit them by being on the Internet.

(13) Chere says:

If Number Four isn’t the UGLIEST site ever, then there are NO ugly sites on the net!

I didn’t even have to see the full site to know that YUCK!!! 4 is BAD.

Good Job Paul!

On the flip side, some of the others are more representative of the sites on the web. Number one being closest :-)

(14) Beverly says:

For me it was a toss-up between #5 and #6, as they were careless ugly.

I visit lots of band sites and messageboards. Black backgrounds are frequently used on many of them, so I personally don’t consider it bad design *shrug* I guess I’m used to it :)

Thanks for an enjoyable contest.

It was a close call between 1 + 4 for me…but eventually 4 got my vote…The background swung it..hehehe…

Not only is #4 uber-ugly, it is alkso a health hazard. My eyeballs collided when a looked at the background for longer than a second [8-0

(18) Judith says:

Number 2 took a different approach from the others. Instead of being in-your-face, painfully and obviously ugly, the designer chose to present a site which at first glance looks nice, but because of some avoidable errors is actually ugly.

Although there sadly are still some out there who would make sites like the other entries, in my mind the ugliness of the web is brought on by those who’ve graduated beyond animated gifs and bleeding-eye backgrounds. These culprits believe they are designing quality websites when they really are producing mediocrity.

(19) Peggy says:

Entry #3 was my choice because it was called an Ugly Page. I think we all have at least one ugly page on our own websites (not necessarily our own self-portrait, however). I thought this was a clever interpretation of the assignment and actually served a purpose to make the reader want to click further to find the answer to the question.

(20) Liza says:

This was such fun to do. After reading the comments I know that these courses were certainly worthwhile taking. By the way, the photo is not really me.

(21) roni says:

I wanted to vote for #2 because the attempt seemed to be to make a real page that people would “think” looked “good”. I thought #3 was the best attempt only because of the tiled background (my peeve). #5 deserves an honorable mention for a solid example of bad ideas. #6 looks like something my son did, probably page2 with #5 being page1.

Your prize is knowing that more people think your page is the ugliest than any of the other challenge entries. :-) Congratulations!
