Poll: Do you design pages for handheld devices?
Thursday February 1, 2007
I'm actually very glad that XHTML Basic came around so that we don't have to use WML
or some other language to build pages for cell phones and other wireless devices. But just because it's easy, doesn't mean that designers think about it. In fact, many Web sites don't make any concessions to small form-factor browsers like cell phones and PDAs. And this makes the pages very difficult to read on those devices.
Do you design pages or portions of your sites for cell phones and handheld devices?

I have a smartphone which I use to check websites. Normaly they only require small changes to make it work.
I also surf with my Pocket PC. Most of the time the Google proxy translates pages well enough so I can use them. But pages especially made for cellphones are a heck of a lot easier to browse!
I have thought of doing that, but would have t learn how to go about it. I think that it would be fun and a different experience.
I try to make all my website XHTML and 508 / WAI accessible compliances and in return most site are compatible with little or no changes. The key I think is also try to keep your content markup and style definitions separate (import external .css). If you do this you can actually test what it might look like on small devices, just comment out your CSS links in the header.

Where can I find webpage design and related instruction of the “Hello World” type for a beginner in mobile content like you find for regular html content.
Not only do I design for mobile sites, but I provide a dedicated domain using PHP, SQL, and a respective .mobi domain - it makes sense to provide for the growing number of PDAs, and Cellular phones that can access the web.
I have recently made one for Mobile WAP. I’m not sure if it’s compatible with all WAP devices, but it worked on the emulator and it’s still a work in progress.
