Poll: Will you switch to Vista for your Web development PC?
Thursday February 8, 2007
In case you didn't hear, Microsoft Vista came out last week. :) As we've established, a lot of people use Windows to build Web pages.
But Vista is so new that you may not be ready to switch to it. I just got a new Dell computer (bought at the Childs Play Charity Auction) and it came with a Vista upgrade coupon. While I'm going to get the upgrade disks, I don't know if I'll install Vista just yet. For one thing, there is no driver yet for my printer.
Will you switch to Vista for your Web development PC?

I´m trying to find a ibook computer to start web development in it, to experiment a new OS.
;P
As I provide tech support for clients as well as web dev & design, I will put a copy of Vista on at least one box. However, in a strict answer to the question, I will only move to Vista on my main production box once it’s been out for a while (more than the next month or so) be probably before buying a new machine.
Many of my clients are still suffering from the forcible upgrades to IE7, so I’m in no mood to be guinea pig.
I can’t say I’m overjoyed at the prospect. I’ve just about got XP running ok! I have recently considered (for the first time in years, since I last had one) getting a Mac (laptop - I wouldn’t get a Mac desktop). This is probably because I miss having *nix shell and built in servers. I use a lot of LAMP stuff. Vista just looks like a load more pointless bloody bloatware. I really don’t think I should *need* more than half a gig of RAM for my desktop to be stable whilst running just a couple of apps.
NikLP,
SiliciO,
You are damn right!
For the web MS s..k
Still no HTML support in Office 07, come on!
Cheers.
There is still no compelling reason to get Vista and the main reason I wont is because i dont want to have to worry about drivers and if I have system crashes I have no one to answer to but myself.
We have a Vista Computer with Dreamweaver and all the fixings for Website Design. My Dreamweaver looses site preferances for ftp connections. Also the mail system is buggy I found out today with relay mail and setting that up using an outside smtp. Audio from other sites when clicked off will still play even tho there is no task running in the task manager. And when is service pack one coming out? I hope soon. OH and I can’t seen to share any files in Vista to my XP machine. It sucks. It did take my old HP printer from 1996. Ahhh the good old days.
You’ve got to be joking!
Get a Mac
I’m of the group that’s going to stick with XP as long as I can. I’ve always been one to jump at new versions. I’m looking at 1 to 2 year hopefully. I use my dev machine for my personal machine too. When you consider the DRM stuff and … I’ll stop now this isn’t a blog.
Took me several years to “master” (and I use that term loosely) win2k and I still use it today in my network. Not broken, don’t fix it.
I hope what I have lasts a few more years then we’ll decide what’s best.
I will resist upgrading for as long as possible and then might go back to Mac, after hearing about the two strikes and you lose your OS (only two installs allowed) and no portability of the OS.
What I really need is a near match to my website platform, so I’ll be switching to Linux on at least one dev computer. As for upgrading my current systems, forget it! One a system is stable, I guard the setup with my life. Who needs the agrivation?
MS contines to do two things, bloat their software so that it only runs on the latest machines with the fastest processor and most memory, and make it more difficult for the average user with all their anti-pirating crap. Hackers ALWAYS find a way around such things, so why bother - just figure in the cost into the purchase price, or a tax write-off. My final concern is how much information this MS operating system will collect and then make available to big brother…invasion of privacy is always a concern with companies like MS.
I am a diehard Windows fan, I’ve used many other OS’s (IBM, Apple, etc.) and always liked Windows best, but this latest version kind of scares me! The DRM issues alone make it not worth it. If they remove that crap ok, but until then I’m happy with XP and now Linux. I haven’t used Linux in a number of years but isntalled the newest Fedora core just the other day and I was impressed by how much it’s improved.
As an ASP.net developer, the simple answer is, yes. The only real question is if I’ll update my hardware first or not. Companies tend to move in a “forward” direction, and despite some of the “Mac only” opinions posted above, Windows is a reality in the workplace. Vista is the future of Windows and as a result the future of developement, for .Net developers at least.
Consider myself a competent novice. Started with 98. Moved to Xp home.Still a happy camper. Will go to Vista when I upgrade my desktop computer. Cannot understand the vehemence of some critics.Yes, I have friends with
Macs. They are strange. [just kdding]
Maybe one day when/if I buy a new computer. I tend to rebuild my existing computer every year instead with upgraded parts. Got some new goodies for it about 3 months ago. The physical computer I bought 3 years ago may not be there anymore, but it’s still with me in spirit. Come to think about it, the only parts that are still from the original computer are: keyboard, monitor, cd-writer, hard-drive & chassis fan.
