Thursday February 15, 2007
I got an email from Jorelyn last week asking me a few questions for her class about being a Webmaster.
check yes

The one that was hardest for me to answer was "What is the best part of being a webmaster?" Partially because it depends on the day :-) and partially because I believe that while I might find the programming really interesting, someone else might find writing the content to be the best part. So, I'm putting it to you. What is your favorite part of Web design and development? Please don't hesitate to comment if my options don't include your favorite part or if you'd like to expand on your choice.

The variety of work involved. Working with metrics, SEO, programming, security, graphics, writing, information architecture, accessibility, discovering new things, discovering new ways to do old things. The worst part…working in an office where nobody understand that you are not a network engineer or tech support.

CSS is a lot of fun. I enjoy doing a view-source on my pages and having the other engineers ask “Hey, where did all the TABLE, TR and TD tags go?”

I find the most enjoyable part of being a web designer is creating the concept. Designing the website to most perfectly portray the clients business, vision and web presence. That gets my creative juices flowing1 Second is optimizing the site and watching the results!

The satisfaction of sitting back and viewing my creation is always a thrill. As someone wiser than me observed however, true satisfaction is in the journey, not the destination. It is in the doing, not the outcome.

LOL - I felt bad when writing content and dealing with customers was low on my list. Come to think of it, now I know why my family doctor feels that way ;-)

Definitely having to come up with a new design is the best part, because you get the chance to try new things and alternative styles of design. I sometimes just draw out website designs for the fun of it just to admire them. Maybe I should make a collection and sell it on.
