Thursday July 5, 2007
There has been a lot of news about the iPhone around the Web in the last few days.

It seems like everyone wants one, has one, or is selling one. But is wireless really something that we as Web designers should be worried about? Or do you think that the iPhone is just another passing fad, and once the hype dies down everyone will return to the Web on their desktops as normal?

Should Web Designers be worried about their Web pages on wireless devices?

Do you have an iPhone, Blackberry, or Treo? Do you use it to browse the Web? Why or why not? If you are going to let others worry about handhelds, what would make you change your mind?

(1) Brandon Frater Phoenix says:

If iPod does go the 10 yards. I think surfing the Internet with it will be very different then with anything else to this date in time. How much the iPod cost and how popular it is, I do not think that it is a “fad.” Surely in time the price will drop as so many computer products do, but it is here to stay.

Only people who happpen to be voting from their iPhone (or whatever) should be allowed to vote “wireless is here”.
And, anyone who does have an uber-phone-web-browser is an oligarch and, therefore, a threat to democracy, anyway.

There are millions of websites out there, that have already been made that aren’t suitable for wireless devices with small screens. I don’t think that anyone will notice if we don’t change our ways right away, but its time to start looking into it.

IT’S THE NETWORK DUUUUDE….iPhone not a fad, but that small display will never replace the big screen…why else do we go to movies? why do we continually buy a bigger and bigger TV….BUT the iPhone will catch on as prices and rates come down, and our content becomes more webable (read web-able, hear web-uh-bul), BUTTTTT until the network that supports it speeds up, it is just a fad, however I think we as developers need to start thinking touch-screen (PDA devers already do) and less key-pad-black-berryish.

(5) Scott Adie says:

It seems to me that this technology is only another level of the technology development. What’s to worry about? Developers will address the requirements of CellWeb in due time just like they’ve done with the internet. The desktop web won’t go defunct anytime soon since it’s not yet come into its own. There’s room for more and its encouraging to see another avenue of technology growth that will create jobs and revenue. Let-er’-rip! Speed and bandwidth have a lot of catching up to do in the process.
