New Riders
The Bottom Line
This book has a lot of great projects with super ideas for improving your Dreamweaver Web site, but be sure to test everything on multiple browsers before you publish. This is not a book for learning advanced techniques, as the solutions are primarily found in the CD and not defined in the book itself.
Pros
  • Lots of great ideas in this book
  • Full-color photos of step-by-step instructions
  • Some really cool ideas and tricks
Cons
  • Reported browser support is sometimes wrong
  • Rather than teach, you just get code snippets on CD
  • This is silly, but the cover photo bugs me
Description
  • Twelve different projects to learn more about Dreamweaver techniques.
  • Full-color photos and screen shots make it easy to follow along with the book.
  • Projects cover: CSS positioning, DHTML menus, templates, Flash, Fireworks, forms, ASP.Net and more.
  • Eleven different authors give you a fresh perspective with every project.
  • The included CD-ROM has Dreamweaver (trialware) and all the code snippets from the projects.
Guide Review - Dreamweaver MX 2004 Magic

Feb 28, 2004 - When I first started reading this book, I thought it was really great. The color photos led me through each project quickly, and even though I wasn't following along with my computer, I found them interesting and fun. Then I started trying to follow along on my computer. My first problem was that a lot of the techniques that were described in this book are not actually described. In nearly every project, the first task is "Install XYZ extension". Now, this in itself, isn't bad, except that I then have to open every file on the CD in order to get an idea of what the extension or code does. My frustration mounted as I tried to emulate the first project on my site. According to the book, this project has "been tested for functionality" in IE 6.0 as well as other browsers. But when I review my version of the site, it doesn't work. I figured I just got it wrong, and fiddled with the code for a while. Then I opened the CD and tested the "indexfinal.htm" in IE 6.0 - and it doesn't work either. As this was the first project in the book, my confidence waned.

This is a good book. The ideas it gave me for my site and some others I'm working on were invaluable. But I want to learn something, not just be handed code on a CD. But if you're looking for great ideas and Dreamweaver tips scattered throughout, then this book is perfect for you.
