Winners of the First Readers Choice Awards
Best Business Site January 1998

HTML Readers Choice Business Site -- image courtesy Jennifer Kyrnin The readers of the HTML Web site have spoken and they've voted Steerforth Press the winner. This site is very graphic heavy, but the graphics are really nice and look sharp on the page. I especially like the contact information as part of the logo graphic. Web designers often forget that there are communication methods beyond the Web. The site was designed by HiTMiLL design.

Best Personal Page January 1998

HTML Readers Choice Personal Page -- image courtesy Jennifer Kyrnin Stepping Stones was the winner with 27% of the votes. I like this site especially because it uses a theme to help the reader navigate through the pages. The stone images are small and something that is familiar to most people which makes this page fairly universal.

The Questions

  1. What Web browser do you prefer to view Web pages with?
  2. What Web browser do you prefer to edit Web pages with?
  3. What editor do you use to write HTML?

I expected this to be fairly clear cut. If someone uses Netscape Gold to edit Web pages, I figured they would use Netscape Gold to write them, and the Netscape browser to view them. But that was more the case with Internet Explorer and Front Page. Only one person browsed with Netcape and wrote HTML with Front Page. Apparently, a lot of people use editors I know nothing about.

Question 1 60% of the respondants prefer Netscape to browse with over 40% Internet Explorer. No other browsers were mentioned.

Question 2 40% of the respondants prefer to edit Web pages with Internet Explorer, 30% with Netscape and 30% with other browsers. Mosaic was not chosen by any respondants.

Question 3 50% of the respondants use an editor not named. I'd be curious to know what editors are being used. 30% use Front Page, and 20% use text editors like I do. No one responded who uses Netscape Gold, Adobe PageMill, HoTMetaL, or Hotdog.

What HTML Editor are You Using?
I'm perfectly happy using improved vi (vim), but what editor would you recommend if I weren't?
