If you're looking for the perfect gift for the Web developer in your life, the Internet is the best place to look. Most of the things that your average designer would want are available and oftentimes inexpensive over the Internet.

Books
Books are a great place to start. And with these five books, your Webmaster will be off and running:

Webmaster in a Nutshell
By: Stephen Spainbour and Valerie Quercia
If you have only one book on Webmastering, let it be this one. This book has everything you need from server maintenance to JavaScript, to CSS. Highly recommended. Paperback.

Hip Pocket Guide to HTML 4
By: Ed Tittel, James Michael Stewart, and Natanya Pitts
This small handbook has all the tags for HTML 4 explained in a clear and concise fashion. It fits in the laptop case, and will be well-thumbed. Paperback.

Dynamic HTML
By: Danny Goodman
Dynamic HTML is the newest exciting feature of Web Development, and this O'Reilly book gives you all of it. You'll learn HTML, JavaScript, CSS, the DOM, and how to put them all together. A big book, but worth it. Paperback.

Professional Style Sheets for HTML and XML
By: Frank Boumphrey
With the advent of CSS, Web designers have much more control over how their pages look. This book will help developers learn to use CSS quickly and effectively. Paperback.

Photoshop Retouching Handbook
By: Carol Braverman
Photoshop is the preferred tool for Web designers. This book explains how to use it to best effect for retouching images, both on and off the Web. Paperback.

Software
Software is another great choice for a Web developer. Most developers will drop everything to try out a new toy, and these are some of my favorites:

Homesite 5
This is a bit more expensive than some of the other gifts on this page, but if your developer is serious about creating high quality Web sites, then this is the tool they need. Homesite provides the most advanced features of Web site development and maintenance for an affordable price.

Norton AntiVirus
Working in the Web industry means that a lot of files come into contact with your system, and this means that developers are ripe for virus attacks. Norton AntiVirus is one of the best virus protection packages available. [win95, winnt, mac, dos]

Hardware
Hardware is a bit more expensive, but can make all the difference between a good Web page and a great one. There is the faster computer, or the new scanner, and other toys that can be so useful for enhancing a Web site:

Inexpensive PC Desktops
The PC Hardware / Reviews Guide has compiled a list of the top 5 budget Desktop computer systems.

Apple iMac
And for the Macintosh lovers out there, the iMac is a good place to start if you don't want to break the bank. This review from Computers.com explains some of the benefits of this computer.

Cannon PowerShot
This small digital camera is a must have for any Web developer. It is easy to use, and generally less expensive than the more complicated models. It fits in your pocket and is 4.0 megapixels for great photos.

HP ScanJet Scanners
The HP ScanJet scanners are some of the best on the market. The colors are sharp, the pictures crisp, and the included software is easy to use. Scanners give flexibility to any Web page, and allow Web Developers to create more unique sites.
