Anti-Aliasing and Font Smoothing

You might not know what that check box in Photoshop does, but it can have very strong consequences for a Web site depending upon what you decide to do with it.

Anti-aliasing used to be a huge deal for Web designers. There were two sides to the issue - those who felt it was extremely important to do on all fonts and GIF images and those who felt that it caused more problems than it solved. But the issue seems to be dead now. What do you think? Is anti-aliasing a thing of the past?
