Where are favicons displayed?

By Jennifer Kyrnin, About.com

Question: Where are favicons displayed?
Answer:

Once you have placed a favicon.ico file on your site it might not be obvious where it will display. There are three primary locations that the favicon is displayed:

  1. The bookmarks or favorites of the Web browser
  2. The address bar of the Web browser, beside the URL
  3. The tab bar of the Web browser

In order to test your favicon after you've uploaded it, you should clear your cache and then visit the page that you've added your favicon to. If it doesn't show up in your tab bar or address bar, bookmark the site and check your bookmarks. If it doesn't show up there either, make sure you have a browser version that supports favicons and then make sure that your icon file is actually an icon file.
