It's sad, but it seems that most offers of free work end up being sources of pain and strife for everyone involved. This may be because they are often done without a contract. So each party expects something very different. As "wontbefooledagain" says "don't be fooled" - write a contract, even if you're doing the work for free.

I did a small website for free for a local chapter of nationwide "honor society" being a member I thought it would be a great contribution for them. I was given access to their portion of server...thru the national office. Since there were no guidelines I followed what other, larger chapters had done. Well, the 'guru' at national did not like the images, wording, etc. although it matched other chapters. I made changes and then there were requests for more changes...all on my 'volunteer' time. Finally, I stopped making changes and pointed out the inconsistencies that were allowed with other sites under 'the guru's auspices'. Well, this did not go over well. My access to the site was stopped. So, I then notified them to take the site down or they would be charged a daily fee for misappropriation of my work. The site was taken down. Don't get fooled!
