Macintosh Text HTML Editors

By Jennifer Kyrnin, About.com

Text editors are HTML editors that allow you to manipulate the HTML tags directly. Some HTML text editors also include a WYSIWYG editor, while others are purely text. This is my list of the best HTML text editors for Macintosh.

31. oXygen Pro

Oxygen is a high quality XML editor that allows you to validate and manage your XML documents, including XHTML. It offers validation and schema evaluation of your documents, as well as various XML languages like XPath and XHTML. It's not a good choice for design focused Web developers, but if you have to handle XML documents in your work, then it's a good choice.

32. EditLive!

EditLive! is a standard WYSIWYG HTML editor. It offers the ability to edit both in WYSIWYG mode and in HTML mode. One of the things I liked was that it has a built-in accessibility analyzer. This makes it easy to write accessible pages. But if it had an HTML validator I couldn't find one.

33. Emilé Lite

More than just an HTML editor Emilé is actually an XML editor for the Macintosh. It isn't optimized for the PowerPC, but it does work well, and functions as an XHTML editor as well. Emilé Lite isn't optimized for the PowerPC and it has fewer features than Emilé.

34. Zend Studio Pro

Zend Studio is a PHP IDE that works well for most Web designers who need to manage PHP Web sites. Standard edition does not include database connectivity or FTP and the Pro version does.

35. eWebEditPro

eWebEditPro is an online, browser-based Web editor for businesses. The idea behind this editor is that it offers WYSIWYG editing capability wherever you are. You just pull up a browser, go to the page that needs editing and login to the editor to edit it.

36. Alpha

Alpha is primarily a text editor that allows Tcl scripting to enhance it's functionality. It does support XML as well as HTML editing. Feature highlights: XML support.

37. Emilé

More than just an HTML editor Emilé is actually an XML editor for the Macintosh. It isn't optimized for the PowerPC, but it does work well, and functions as an XHTML editor as well.

38. Zend Studio Standard

Zend Studio is a PHP IDE that works well for most Web designers who need to manage PHP Web sites. Standard edition does not include database connectivity or FTP and the Pro version does.

39. TextEdit

TextEdit is the free text editor that comes with Macintosh OS X systems. It doesn't have a lot of features specifically for Web development, but if you want to start quickly writing HTML and don't want to have to download anything, this is a great place to start.
