Windows Text HTML Editors

By Jennifer Kyrnin, About.com

Text editors are HTML editors that allow you to manipulate the HTML tags directly. Some HTML text editors also include a WYSIWYG editor, while others are purely text. This is my list of the best HTML text editors for Windows.

21. NetOjbects Fusion

Fusion is a very powerful HTML editor. It combines all the tasks you need to get your Web site up and running including development, design, and FTP. Plus you can add special features to your pages like captchas on forms and ecommerce support.

22. Amaya

Amaya is the W3C Web editor. It also acts as a Web browser. It validates the HTML as you write it, and since it defaults to showing you the tree structure of your Web documents, it can be very useful for learning to understand the DOM and how your documents look in the document tree. It has a lot of features that most Web designers won't ever use, but if you're worried about standards and you want to be 100% sure that your pages work with the W3C standards, this is a great editor to use.

23. CoffeeCup Free HTML Editor

The CoffeeCup Free HTML editor is a text editor with a lot of potential. A lot of the features it has in the menus are reliant on other CoffeeCup products to use - such as FTP, the photo gallery maker, CSS editing, and so on. This is still a powerful HTML editor, but I would recommend you purchase the full version of the editor to get the real juice from this product. One important thing to note: many sites list this editor as a free WYSIWYG editor, but when I tested, you had to buy the full version to get WYSIWYG support. The free version is a very nice text editor only.

24. Selida

Selida is a very nice WYSIWYG Web page editor for Windows. It offers a lot of features that make it easy to edit Web pages and is free.

25. SeaMonkey

SeaMonkey is the Mozilla project all-in-one Internet application suite. It includes a Web browser, email and newsgroup client, IRC chat client, and composer - the Web page editor. One of the nice things about using SeaMonkey is that you have the browser built-in already so testing is a breeze. Plus it's a free WYSIWYG editor with an embedded FTP to publish your Web pages.

26. Web Weaver Gold

Web Weaver and Web Weaver Gold offer lots of features for text editors. They are easy to use and the main difference is that Gold offers a few more SEO options and site management tools.

27. Style Master

Style Master takes a different approach to Web page design. Instead of focusing on the HTML, it focuses on the CSS - so that you can work on the design of your sites in an intuitive way. I've found that many Web sites have much more complicated CSS than HTML code, so this is a great program to use to untangle the mess.

28. PSPad

PSPad is a programming editor for Windows. It offers a lot of features applicable to Web editors such as HTML syntax highlighting, integration with TopStyle Lite for CSS editing and a built-in FTP client to manage files online.

29. Web Weaver

Web Weaver and Web Weaver Gold offer lots of features for text editors. They are easy to use and the main difference is that Gold offers a few more SEO options and site management tools.

30. Arachnophilia

Arachnophilia is not free - it's "careware", but just because you don't have to pay cash for it doesn't mean it's not a good product. In fact, it's a great text HTML editor with a lot of functionality. The color coding makes it easy to use. It may or may not work on Mac and Unix. Feature highlights: Color coded XHTML editing.
