Windows WYSIWYG Editors

By Jennifer Kyrnin, About.com

WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editors are HTML editors that attempt to display the Web page as it will show on the browser. They are visual editors, and you don't manipulate the code directly. Some HTML WYSIWYG editors also include a text editor, while others are purely WYSIWYG. This is my list of the best HTML WYSIWYG editors for Windows.

31. Web Studio 4.0 Deluxe

Web Studio 4.0 is trying to answer the challenge of Web design tools that tools like Word have provided. Namely, the idea that you should be able to build a Web page by simply dragging the images or multimedia elements that you want onto your document and then typing text around them. Web Studio 4.0 does a good job at this - by making the creation of a Web page easy to understand, by removing all direct access to it from the user.

32. BlueVoda

BlueVoda was recommended to me by customers of the About.com Web Design site. It is a WYSIWYG Web page editor built specifically for the small business who needs to create and maintain a Web site without knowledge of HTML. However, it appears to only connect to VodaHost hosting service. When I requested a copy, I never received a response. While it appears easy to use, I can't recommend this product as I've never been able to try it out.

33. SiteSpinner

SiteSpinner is a WYSIWYG Web page editor that makes it easy to build and maintain your Web pages. The built-in graphics editor and creator is really useful for making buttons and images. And it supports drag and drop of your page elements for easier manipulation.

34. HotDog PageWiz

HotDog PageWiz is a slimmed down WYSIWYG editor with text editor support. It is designed to grow with you as you learn to build Web pages. As you feel more comfortable, you can enable more features and flexibility.

35. NetOjbects Fusion Essentials

Fusion Essentials is a very simplified version of NetObjects Fusion. It provides you with simple tools to create Web pages quickly and easily. It is a good tool for newcomers to Web design, and if you like it a lot you might end up wanting the full version of Fusion.

36. Microsoft Visual Web Developer

Microsoft Visual Web Developer Express is a way to create a simple Web page really quickly. With the built in templates and wizards it's really easy to do. There are lots of fun additions to add links to sites like Flickr, Digg, or Amazon. This is the Web portion of Microsoft Visual Studio Express.

37. eWebEditPro+XML

eWebEditPro+XML offers the same benefits as eWebEditPro only it's for XML editing rather than HTML or Web pages specifically. This is a browser-based XML editor that edits the XML files on the server.

38. SiteSpinner Pro

SiteSpinner Pro (formerly WebEngine) improves upon the SiteSpinner interface by adding more DHTML support and interactive animation to the image editing. It is a WYSIWYG Web page editor that makes it easy to build and maintain your Web pages. The built-in graphics editor and creator is really useful for making buttons and images. And it supports drag and drop of your page elements for easier manipulation.

39. Radio UserLand

Radio is a software package that connects you to the Radio UserLand Web log service. It's not really a standalone Web page editor, but if all you need or want is a Web log, then this service is nice. It includes 40MB of space and a year of service on the Radio UserLand network.

40. Website X5 Compact

Website X5 Compact is a less expensive version of Website X5 Evolution. It offers the same WYSIWYG functionality, with no access to the HTML code. One feature missing that I was surprised at was tables - you need to purchase Evolution to get table support. The documentation states that it will deliver XHTML 1.0 strict Web sites using CSS. This looks like a decent product for small businesses and individuals who don't have time to learn HTML or CSS.

41. WebDwarf

WebDwarf makes it easy for you to create and maintain Web sites without knowing any HTML. It includes FTP to publish your pages and even an image editor to maintain your images. Note: WebDwarf is free for non-commercial use.

42. Angel Writer

Angel Writer is not really a Web editor, it's an RTF text editor that can save documents as HTML. It doesn't write valid XHTML and it adds a lot of attributes and tags that have been replaced by style sheets. It did put some styles in, but not where I expected it to. If you're looking for a free Web page editor, there are many others that offer better functionality. For example, when you save a document as HTML it puts the file name and path in as the title - and I couldn't figure out how to change it in the program. This is a fine text editor, but not a great Web editor.
Do you have a Web editor that you absolutely love or positively hate? Write a review of your HTML editor and let others know which editor you think is the best.
