Finding the perfect domain name can be a challenge. And if you think of a domain name while you're out and about, you might want to see if it's available right away. With these tools you can find out the availability of your domains or just research domains and IPs that are hitting your Web server listed in order of price.
Binero Domain
Binero Domain only works on 2G iPods and iPhones. It searches for .com, .net, .org, and some Swedish domains. A future update should include the ability to register available domains.
This app is free.
Domain Scout
Domain Scout gives you the opportunity to search for .com, .org, .co.uk, and .de domains. You can also mark your favorite domains and review your history of domain searches. If the domain is not available, you can run a whois on it to find out the owner.
This app is free.
DomainApp
DomainApp lets you input your desired name and it will search across several different top-level domains to see if it's available. You can then mark the search or the domain itself as a favorite. And if you find one you like, you can register it through iWantMyName.com.
This app is free.
DomainPro
DomainPro searches for your domain on .com, .net, and .org. If the name is available, you can buy it. If it's not you can backorder it through Bizmosis.
This app is free.
DomainTool
DomainTool looks up the domains you want on a Whois server. The domains you look up are not stored anywhere but on your device. But if you bookmark favorites, you can send them via email. This is a whois app rather than a domain search tool specifically.
This app costs $0.99.
iDig
iDig is a conduit to the very useful Unix dig command. This app will do reverse IP lookups for you as well as dig into domain name information. This is more useful for designers who maintain their Web server and need to know information about spammers and hackers attacking the server.
This app costs $0.99.
Ping
Ping is another useful domain tool for Web designers who maintain the Web server. When you ping the device you can see if the network connection to that machine is up or down. With this app you can define how many packets to send, between 1 and 9.
This app costs $0.99.
Whois
Whois is a domain tool to look up information about the domain. This is useful to find out if the domain is owned and who owns it. When I used this, I didn't find the results to be very accurate. Other whois programs seemed to do a better job.
This app costs $0.99.
Whoiser
Whoiser is one of the best whois domain tools I looked at on the iPhone. It does both IP and domain name lookups and seems to return good information. What's especially useful is that you can then email the results of your searches.
This app costs $0.99.
Web Tools
Web Tools gives you more than just a whois app on your iPhone. Once you've looked up a domain you can go to their website, view the whois information, ping the site, and get information about the host including their location. You can also save your favorites, check the availability of domains, and mark your favorites.
This app costs $1.99.
Nomina
Nomina is so much more than a domain tool that it probably shouldn't be on this list. It is a branding tool to help you and your clients find names that will work for their businesses and products. It will tell you the available domains, trademarks, common law usage of the name, relevance of the name. It will even search iTunes to tell you if the name is already an app.
This app costs $14.99.
