404 pages are required by most Web servers. And if you don't customize one, a generic one will be used for you. The generic 404 pages are some of the ugliest things you have ever seen. They are very plain and provide no extra information for your customers. And when your customer gets a 404 page, that's when they need extra information the most.
404 pages make great portfolio projects because they are just a single page. You can do them working on the design, look, and feel of the site. Or you can build one that uses programming to help the readers even more. Or you can do both. And whatever you do, you'll be showcasing your knowledge in a compact page for your clients.
This gallery has 404 pages submitted by readers of About Web Design. If you are interested in showing off your 404 page or just receiving critique on it, go ahead and post your URL to the forum.
