Custom 404 Page - Web Design Portfolio Project

By , About.com Guide

Boring 404 page

This 404 page has nothing on it, it's ugly and provides no useful information to the customer. How would you redesign a boring 404 page to make it interesting and useful to your customers?

Screen shot by J Kyrnin
Project Type:
  • Single page project
  • Web design project
  • Programming project
Purpose of this Project:

The default messages on 404 or "not found" pages are very unhelpful. They are also very plain. The goal of this portfolio project is to redesign a 404 page to make it more fun and more useful.

Project Description:

Create a 404 page for a website (any website) and make it fun and useful. Include information such as:

  • Where to find help
  • What to do about the broken link
  • Interesting or useful content on the site
  • Anything else you think would help improve a 404 page

If you're interested in programming Web pages, add some programmatic aspect to the 404 page. Such as:

  • Detect the referring URL
  • Create a contact form with the broken link pre-populated
  • Add dynamic content to the page depending upon where the customer was trying to go
  • Something else
Technical Requirements for the Project:

None. This project can be done however you would like to do it.

Original Page:

As you can see from the screen shot, the original page has a small amount of information (the URL that wasn't found), but doesn't help the customer at all.

Special Notes for the Project::

None

Project Resources:
