Turn on and off the table border

This is a very simple trick that many people don't learn immediately when building tables. Leave the border on until you are ready to show the page to someone. The border attribute makes it easy to see where you have cells that are empty or are spanning too many columns, etc. Changing that border="0" to border="1" can save you hours of fiddling with the table.
