Why did you highlight that Web Design Company and Not My Company?

By Jennifer Kyrnin, About.com

Question: Why did you highlight that Web Design Company and Not My Company?

The About.com Guide to Web Design and HTML receives dozens of new Web design companies for listing every month, and not all of them can be highlighted. But there are some things you can do to help increase your chances of being chosen as a highlighted Web Design firm.

Answer:
  1. Fill out the form accurately.
If the form asks for your first and last name, then filling in your company name or some other obviously fake answer is a great way to get not only not promoted, you could risk having your submission not accepted at all. The name field is required. If you don't want your name to be displayed then you should not submit a listing.
  2. Fill out the form completely.
Not all the fields are required. But the more fields that you fill out the better a submission it will be - both for About.com and for your potential customers. Leaving most or all of the non-required fields blank makes your submission look like a spam link request, not a well thought out attempt at marketing.
  3. Don't write too much.
The fields are small for a reason - the About.com templates do not allow a lot of text, and the more you type, the more I'll have to edit.
  4. Write in complete, and grammatically correct sentences.
Yes, people make typos, but do your best to show that you thought about this submission for more than 3 minutes.
  5. Use all 5 portfolio slots.
If you state that you've been in business for 12 years, but cannot name any sites that you've built, I would not believe either your so-called experience or that you have the skills I need. The same is true for listing your home page as one (or the only) portfolio site. The homepage URL is automatically included in the listing, adding it as a portfolio item just looks stupid.
  6. Show that you do know something about the Web.
If you're asked for a URL, include the http:// at the front (the URL fields all default to that). If you must use special characters, escape them - that includes the ampersand (&).
  7. Don't use HTML or assume that your carriage returns will be reflected in the review.
Just because you put in a carriage return or use * as a bullet item doesn't mean that I will add those in to the listing. The more work I have to do correcting your listing, the less likely it will get my attention as a promotable listing.
  8. Most Important Be interesting.
Think of me as your first potential customer. Write content that would make me want to at least look at your Web site if not hire you. Saying the same thing as every other Web designer listing won't get you a promotion, it might get a yawn.
