How did you become a Web designer?
I started messing with websites in December 2006. My wife and I were expecting our newborn daughter in January so I wanted to create a website to showcase our photos, videos and daily activities leading up to the birth. I managed to to secure a domain, hosting plan and Macromedia Dreamweaver 8. This was all brand new to me so I did a lot of online researching and finally managed to put together the site in a week or two. After constant upkeep of the site and several redesigns once I gained more skills, I started to design a couple of sites for coworkers. I knew this was something I definitely wanted to pursue.
Are you self-taught or did you get a degree?
I have predominantly been self taught in this manner. I have spent countless hours in forums asking questions and answering questions once I gained more knowledge. I started attending classes in January of 2009 which has helped me tremendously to date. Before that it was strictly doing Internet searches for anything I was unsure how to do. There are lots of great resources out there including Jennifer's great advice and tips here at About.com.
Tips and Tricks
- If I had to do it all over again I would have started school first. Like in golf, you develop some bad habits and they are very hard to break once you finally realize the correct way to do something. Also, you don't know what you don't know until someone shows you the way. My advice to anyone out there just getting started in designing websites, whether it be for personal use or for paying clients, learn all you can before you jump into this business head first. It will help you in the long run instead of getting in over your head.

I am currently attending the Art Institute of Pittsburgh online. I am working towards a BS in Web Design and Interactive media

I started designing Web pages in December of 2006.

Redefined Web Design is the name of my business. It was created in January 2009. This is a part time business as I work full time at another job plus I am a part time student. I hope to grow my skills and eventually one day make this my full time job. The site is: http://www.redefinedwebdesign.com
