Finding Time to Learn it All Can Be Challenging

Share Your Story: How I Became a Web Designer

From pigeonriver

How did you become a Web designer?

I wanted to share my genealogy online when I did my first site. Then a year ago our DAR wanted to put up a website & asked me to build one for them. After that my boss wanted me to redesign our site (which I'm still working on getting up) and so I delved a little deeper.

Are you self-taught or did you get a degree?

Totally self taught. Back when I was in school they didn't even have computer classes! I have taken a few computer classes at a local jr. college, but nothing remotely related to web design. There is nothing available in computer design of any sort nearby other than the very basics.

I've been getting your newsletter for a while now, but I must admit that often I don't take the time to do more than skim over it. Now that I've really gotten in to designing the pages I've been paying more attention.

Tips and Tricks

  • No regrets at all.
  • It would be nice to have some hands-on training if I could find some classes that would fit into my schedule & weren't too high priced. It's been good to learn on my own because I have to dig deep to find answers to my problems. The hardest part is learning what everything is called. Sometimes I look at the index in a book or the help section of my program or do a search online for an answer to my question, but the big problem is that I don't know the right words to get my answer. Maybe the forums would help me solve some problems. Finding time is the hardest part.

Working toward a degree in elementary education.

How long ago did you become a Web designer?
