Share Your Story: How I Became a Web Designer

From Nicki Snoblin

Self-Taught on the Job

How did you become a Web designer?

I was working in the office of an elected official and was asked to oversee the redesign of her website and then to handle updating of the site once it was launched. In working with the web designer on this site, I became very interested in web design as a way to give myself a creative outlet while providing a communication tool for my clients.

Are you self-taught or did you get a degree?

A graphic designer friend taught me the fundamentals of Dreamweaver. Other than that, I'm self-taught. I have family members who work in computer science, so I have lots of resources at hand when I need help with Javascript, have questions regarding servers, etc. I have reference books on CSS and HTML that I use frequently, and I often use Google to find answers to my questions.

Tips and Tricks

  • I have no regrets whatsoever! I love what I do - I'm constantly amazed by the power of CSS - and I think by being self-taught, I have been forced to be flexible and to constantly look for new and better ways of doing things. I try hard to create sites that won't embarrass me if someone should view the source code!

What University or School did you attend?

I have no formal education in web design, but I have a background in communications and some graphic design experience.

What degree or certification did you receive?

None for web design.

How long ago did you become a Web designer?

Five years ago.

I create websites for small businesses, nonprofits, elected officials, political candidates, and political organizations. I also do e-newsletters for my clients to coordinate with their websites.

Jennifer Kyrnin, Web Design / HTML Guide, says:

I was very impressed with this story, as it shows someone who is willing to take the time and effort required to learn a new skill. And Nikki not only learned the new skill, but then put it to work as a business. It shows someone who is determined and motivated and works hard.

This is a very typical story. Many designers are self-taught. And most self-taught designers work very hard to provide the best quality websites around.
