How did you become a Web designer?
I started freelancing in Web Design right from the time I joined University as a mature student in London. I was 23 and had worked in other areas before. After graduating I moved away from design for 2 years when I was working as a web programmer and server architect for for a leading consulting firm. I was then drawn back towards design side of things and wanted to use my creativity. Hence I started freelancing as a web designer. In 2006 I started my Web Design Company.
Are you self-taught or did you get a degree?
As far as Web design is concerned I am completely self taught. My computer science degree at university had no element of design in the curriculum. I picked up all my design skills through interest, personal research and practice to start with. Subsequently many years of freelancing and consulting experience in Web design allowed me to specialise and gain experience in this field.
Tips and Tricks
- I am quite satisfied with the way things have turned out. My web design business http://www.kronikmedia.co.uk is doing fairly well in spite of the economic recession. However in hindsight there are always things that could be done differently. It took me a long time to establish my business. During the initial stages when I was struggling, my colleagues were doing really well in high paid jobs. Although things turned out Ok in the end, I think I came into business too quickly. Maybe I should have freelanced for a few more years before setting up a business and employing people. First few years were really stressful.

What degree or certification did you receive?
4 years BSc Honours in Computer Science. Although web design was not really a part of the course at all and neither were any graphic design areas. The course was purely science and numeric based.

Tell us a little about your Web design business (+URL)
I started my Web Design Business in 2004. For the first 2 years I worked in partnership with a private investor. The office was set up in London with private venture capital funding. In 2006 I parted ways to start my own Web design and Development business in London itself.
